DENISON, Texas (KTEN) — The long-awaited Phase 2 of the Designing Downtown Denison project is underway.

City officials and residents gathered Thursday morning for a groundbreaking ceremony that will completely transform the 300 and 400 blocks Main Street between Fannin and Rusk avenues. The project is designed to breathe new life into the the city.

The core of the D3 redevelopment plan is a total revamp of Heritage Park, a communal area that will be redesigned to better accommodate Denison's broad range of activities throughout the year.

"This process began in 2016 with an idea. Here we are today, breaking ground for Phase 2 which will be the center phase of the completion of our revitalization of main street," stated Mayor of Denison Janet Gott.

"These are some things that we actually get to use once we're finished using it," said Chip Piazza, president of the project contractor Piazza Construction. "This is for the public, that I can bring my grandkids here to enjoy. I don't necessarily get to do that with just a building."

Work on Phase 2 is expected to formally begin on May 6 in Depot Alley in the 300 block of West Main. Construction will shift to Main Street itself about three months later.

It will be two years before the work is complete.

Phase 1 of Designing Downtown Denison was completed last August.
