DAVIS, Okla. (KTEN) -- Davis High School senior and first-generation college student Lexy Poyner was recently named as one of just 60 Jack Kent Cooke College Scholars nation-wide, and the only scholar from the state of Oklahoma.

"She's a self-starter, so she's very proactive in everything in regards to her education." Said High School Superintendent Trey Owens. “In my six years here, there's been nobody like her."

The Jack Kent Cooke College Scholarship gives Poyner $55,000 a year, and will pay for the entirety of her undergraduate and graduate educations.

"It's really relieving to know that I will not have to worry about paying for college or higher education." Poyner said.

Poyner believes her extracurriculars played a large role in landing her this scholarship.

"This year I'm the key club, the student council, and the senior class president, I'm on the academic team and the scholastic team.” She stated. However, she is also active outside of school. “I'm even a t-ball coach here."

Receiving this scholarship puts Poyner in some elite company.

"We had a young man, a couple years ago, who was accepted into the naval academy.” Owens mentioned. “It's the same type of person."

Wherever her journey takes her, Poyner will never forget where she came from.

"This is my home, like I love it here. It's amazing."

Poyner will be attending the University of Oklahoma to major in both accounting and finance.
