DENISON, Texas -- An animal rescue service is getting into the season of giving by raising money to give back to our four-legged friends who don't have homes.

"The babies... we love the fur babies!" said Denison Animal Welfare Group president Stephanie Phillips.

People can visit DAWG's Facebook page and bid for 70 auction items in the comments. You'll find custom-built dog houses, pet beds, decorative household goods and gift certificates available.

Bids will be accepted through 5 p.m. on December 15.

In recent years, the group has raised between $5,000 and $8,000 in its online Christmas auction, and all funds raised go to better care for strays.

"It really really helps us pay for veterinary care," Phillips explained. "A lot of our animals are sick and compromised when they come in, so we want to get them healthy... and that takes money."

DAWG officials hope their Christmas auction leads online visitors to check out the animals in the pictures.

"They may also take a look at our adoptable pet and see something that's a fit for their home," explained DAWG volunteer Dawn Witcher. "It helps us get them as healthy as we can so they go off with their best opportunity. Everybody wants to adopt a healthy pet, so we want to make sure they're healthy.
The Christmas auction helps the animals, but, so do the volunteers.

"After about two days with our volunteers, they become different animals," Phillips said. "They open up, they're friendly, they're loving, they love people and they just want to please them."

The volunteers say if the auction leads you to adopt, be sure to love them way after the Christmas tree is taken down.

"We want to find homes for them. We want nothing more than them to find their forever fur home," Phillips said.
