ADA, Okla. — Karl Fontenot, who spent the last 34 years in prison because of his alleged involvement in the 1984 kidnapping, rape and murder of Donna Haraway in Ada, is scheduled to be released.

The Haraway murder received national attention after being profiled in a Netflix documentary based on a John Grisham book earlier this year.

Fontenot is set to walk out of prison on December 19. He has consistently maintained his innocence.

The family of Tommy Ward, the other man connected to this case, believes this decision could help win his freedom as well.

"It kind of expedites what's going on with him right now because the information is almost identical," said brother Melvin Ward. "I actually had come to the fact that for the first 30 years... the first 32 years... I thought Tommy was just going to spend the rest of his life in there."

Tommy Ward has an appeal scheduled next year.

"I think Karl being out is wonderful," Melvin Ward said. "It's justice finally happening for this kid. It's a long time coming, and he deserves to be out... Tommy deserves to be out."
