ARDMORE, Okla. -- If you've walked by Ardmore City Hall or through Central Park, you may have noticed the familiar buffalo statutes are missing.

That's because after about 15 years of wear and tear, these buffaloes need a makeover.

"The paint had faded pretty severely," Assistant City manager Kevin Boatright explained. "The weather had really done some damage to some of the fiberglass."

The city has partnered with Create Ardmore -- an organization known for putting art in the spotlight -- to create a contest so local artists can decide what the updated buffaloes should look like.

"It's basically just a template that shows both sides of the buffalo, and you can sketch or draw what you would paint on it," Boatright said.

For Ardmore-area artists like Robert Smartt, he chance to have their work displayed like this came as a welcome surprise.

"Usually the opportunity is not given to the local artist," Smartt said. "I think that's great, because in the past it hadn't been."

Giving the city's talented artists new exposure is something the city hopes to do more of in the future.

"We just think that it adds more interest to people locally when they know somebody locally is involved in it," Boatright said.

The contest applications are due in January, and the new-look buffaloes will be unveiled in April.
