DURANT, Okla. -- For the first time ever, Durant police officers will be allowed to grow a beard.

Detective Brandon Laxton is keen to ".. see how nasty I can get my beard to be!"

"Oh, mine's going to be nasty!" Officer John Puana added.

Okay, maybe "nasty" isn't the right word here, but because of the previous policy, officers really have no idea what their beard is going to look like.

"Normally, we have a policy that says officers have to be clean-shaven except for mustaches," said Chief David Houser. "That's just the policy we adhere to at the Durant Police Department."

But for the month of November, that policy is being suspended.

"If the officers want to donate $100 to help out some of our members that are in need for some family medical expenses, they can pay the $100, forgo the policy, grow a beard for a month -- the month of November -- and we'll see how it looks."

The funds are being split down the middle for law enforcement families in need, letting it go for a good cause.

"This is a good way to help them out," Laxton said. "Can't really pass it up, and I don't have to shave for a month!"

The best beard will be chosen at the end of the month, and that person will get his Benjamin back.
