ARDMORE, Okla. -- The University Center of Southern Oklahoma welcomed the first footsteps on the new campus hiking trail Tuesday.

The one-mile path has been in the works since the beginning of the year.

"We were hoping to start up in April, and of course it took a while to get put it all together... especially because we ended up getting a lot of donations," said UCSO president Peggy Maher.

The University Center Trail becomes a useful resource for students and staff to get outside and get active.  But UCSO urges everyone in Ardmore to take advantage.

"A lot of it is because I consider us to be a community resource, and the trails are important to the community," Maher said. "People are very excited to be able to come up here."

Because the unpaved trail winds through wooded sections of campus, it will keep people healthy in more ways than one.

"Just being out in nature is a good way to relieve stress from just everyday life," Maher said. "Also, it's important to be connected socially so you could go walking with a friend."

The trail will be open 24/7, but for safety's sake, UCSO recommends avoiding walks after dark.

"We would like people to walk sun-up to sundown, but we don't have a way of closing the campus," Maher said. "That's our request, but it won't literally be closed."

The new University Center trail links to an existing trail at nearby Ardmore Regional Park.
