DURANT, Okla. -- The Durant Regional Airport is closed.

But it's only temporary.

The runway is being expanded by 25 percent to 6,800 feet. It's a $6.7 million project fueled by rapid growth in Bryan County.

"We're getting more and more customers in," said airport spokeswoman Katie Hefner. "Certainly we've had some donations given to us from the expansion efforts, and they would like to see the runway a lot larger and be able to take in more capacity, more airplanes, larger jets... things like that."

A temporary runway will be open starting Friday, but the main runway will not be complete for another 65 work days.
