DURANT, Okla. -- Here's some news for movie lovers in the Durant area: There's a new theater in town.

The Monterey Chapel of Allied Arts is an independent theater in a former church sanctuary operated by former city manager Tim Rundel. He's screening "The Goonies" Thursday night  at 7 o'clock.

"Film is part of the arts, and we wanted something that families and folks have told us a place they want to take their kids for good family nights... get us out of the house," Rundel said.

The full movie experience includes popcorn, candy and soda. Tickets are just $5 and can be purchased online or at the door.

"The Wizard of Oz" is the next attraction set for The Monterey on Thursday, September 26. "Ghostbusters," "E.T.," "Elf," and "It's a Wonderful Life" are also on the schedule.

The Monterey is located at the corner of 9th Avenue and Texas Street in Durant.
