OVERBROOK, Okla. -- As the summer starts to heat up, volunteer fire departments around Texoma are looking for donations to help them stay cool in the line of duty.

It's important to remember the first responders who give their time to keep you safe..

Criner Hills Volunteer Fire Department Chief Charles Campbell said donations of beverages, snacks and various hygiene items is most welcome.

"Drinks and water and Gatorade and stuff like that, to keep it in stock," he said. "You may go through eight or 10 cases of water."

In the dog days of summer, it's even more important that firefighters are fully stocked with these items, because under all that gear and equipment it's easy for a firefighter to suffer a heat-related illness.

"It's mainly mostly in the summertime, because of the heat and stuff, especially when you start having grass fires and house fires," Campbell said.

Donations are always welcome at the fire station, 3346 South County Line Road in Overbrook, because you never know when a fire will strike.

"We pretty well got some water right now, but next three days we may be plum out," Campbell said. "It all depends on the fire lines."

Criner Hills, which serves residents in Love and Carter counties, also accepts donations online via an Amazon Wish List.
