TOM BEAN, TX - "This is, the last first day. I've played, this is my 10th year, so this is a big year"
Avery Chapman,a senior center for the Tom Bean Tomcats is just one of two seniors on the team this season.
"Being the only two seniors, me and Avery have kind of bonded a lot together and kind of become a unit. And being only two of us, it makes it a lot easier to clearly give directions rather than have four, five, six to ten people" said Kaleb Graham.
"What you do as a coach, you come out here and coach the kids who love the game. If they don't want to play, then you know, you don't want them out here. All these young men they love football and that's why they're here. Especially these two seniors, they've worked really hard this summer. They've gone to some extra camps to try to get some notoriety, to get their name out and they're ready to go. And I can't wait to see how they do" said Head Coach Zach Wood.
This is Wood's second season with the tomcats after being promoted from assistant coach. They went from 1 and 9 to 5 and 6. Even qualifying for playoffs but the team wants more.
"Coach had a lot of goals set last year, and we met them. And of course as a teammate I want to break those goals and break those records" said Chapman.
"As a team, what I want to see happen is growth within the individual players. I want to see seniors, myself and Avery, leading the team. And I want to see us bonding together as a team" Graham said.
They know there is still lots of work to be done, but they're ready for the challenge.
"In regards to wins, my expectation is that we make the playoffs. Last year we made the playoffs, and this year our expectation is to make the playoffs and to win a couple games in the playoffs" said Coach Wood.
