ADA, Okla. -- For many, the kitchen is for cooking.

But for Ada chef Renee Rice, it's all about comfort.

"When I'm in the kitchen, I am in my element," she said. "I am cool; I am calm."

She said that feeling has roots in her childhood.

"Good, wholesome, delicious food, and I was around it my whole life," Rice said. "My family are great cooks, so when I was little bitty I was always around a kitchen."

Now, Renee Rice is cooking on the network TV show MasterChef competing for the title of top home cook... and a $250,000 prize.

"To be completely honest with you, I never knew what MasterChef was; didn't even watch it," she said. "And then you get top 20, when you get the white apron, and fortunately I did."

During the show's 10th season, Rice has been blindfolded, timed, and tested to the limits.

"There's no mishaps, because if there is, you're out," she said.

But for Rice, it's been a life-changing experience.

"Getting all this positive feedback, it's so uplifting," she said. "It's really made me become a better person."

Rice has made it to the top 16 MasterChef finalists. She says the secret to her success is humility along with the ability to accept criticism from the toughest of celebrity chefs, host Gordon Ramsay.

"The reason he is hard on you is because he sees the potential, and he wants to bring that out," Rice said.

Her takeaway for her Texoma neighbors is to simply never give up.

"Go and actually pursue what you really love, because opportunities can happen, and that's exactly what happened to me," Rice said.

Her next appearances on MasterChef are coming up on July 10 and 11.
