SHERMAN, Texas -- The Service Academy for Youth -- SAY -- is a week-long summer camp for young people to help with projects that improve neighborhoods in Sherman and Denison.

Assignments range from painting homes and fences to rebuilding a porch and planting flowers.

The program is organized by Sherman's Grand Central Station.

"Teaching the kids to give back to the community to those who are not as fortunate as us, or helping nonprofits, and that sort of thing... just to make the circle of life go around," SAY camp director Lauren Sims explained.

Some of the kids worked on rebuilding a porch and adding a ramp to Sam Thompson's home in Sherman.

"My parents aren't in great health, but they love to spend a lot of time outside," he said. "They tore this whole deck off, and it was getting bad... it was getting weathered... boards are starting to crack. And they're rebuilding it from basically the ground up."

This is the program's 22nd year, and 112 students in 5th through 12th grade are taking part. They're always looking for additional volunteers.
