PLANO, Texas -- A one-time Texoma doctor who was convicted of illegal opioid distribution learned his punishment on Thursday.

Howard Gregg Diamond was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.

Diamond's penalty -- for conspiracy to possess and distribute along with health care fraud -- was handed down at a federal courthouse in Plano, Texas.

Prosecutors said Diamond wrote prescriptions for hydrocodone, fentanyl, morphine, oxycodone and other opioids from his pain management offices in Sherman and Paris.

Some of those prescriptions proved fatal for more than a half dozen patients.
