MADILL, Okla. -- Animal shelters in Ardmore and Madill are packed with pooches looking for a forever home.

The Madill shelter has seen an increase in dogs coming through this spring, and it is overcrowded. Staffers are hoping people will adopt these pups or their original owners will pick them up.

The clock is ticking on these pets.

"Yes, we'll have no choice but to put them down," said James Pevehouse of Madill Animal Control. "I've had some of them here almost a year."

Volunteer Kathy Germany said there is a disturbing trend of pet owners who are failing to meet their responsibilities.

"I believe that people are dumping them in town," she said. "Then James has to pick them up, and then they don't have to pay the fee to bring their dog down here."

Adoptions at the Madill Animal Shelter are only $10 on Thursday and Friday to save some canine lives. The facility is located at 815 South 3rd Street. Call 580-872-4660 for more information.
