ARDMORE, Okla. -- Some Ardmore artists are using the city's fire hydrants as their canvas.

The Ardmore Fire Department and Create Ardmore are teaming up to give these hydrants a new look. It's big help to the fire department, which maintains about 1,600 hydrants around town.

"Painting hydrants is at the bottom of the list," said training officer Jason Woydziak. "We've got our normal daily activities, and training and public relations events."

Maria Wilkinson, who sits on the board of directors for Create Ardmore, came up with the idea a couple of moths ago after driving past a hydrant that needed a new paint job. She decided enough was enough.

So far, one hydrant has a new paint job as a whimsical Dalmatian.

Create Ardmore artists will start painting hydrants in the city's cultural district by the end of the week. Their only restriction: The color on the top of the hydrant must not be changed, because it is a code for how much water it can supply.

"If you have a town full of hydrants that are creatively painted, there might be someone that says on a Saturday, 'Hey, let's go to Ardmore and check out those cool fire hydrants!'" Woydziak said.
