DURANT, Okla. -- Almost six  months after Durant passed an ordinance permitting the sale of medical marijuana, the city is seeing growth in that sector.

There are already seven active dispensaries that have a certificate of compliance. And their sales are starting to have an impact on tax revenue.

"The sales tax has increased as these businesses have reached compliance and put up shop, started operating," said City Planner Matthew Nahrstedt.

He added there are at least a dozen more individuals interested in opening a medical marijuana dispensary in Durant.

Dustin Blevin owns The Remedy, one of the established businesses.

"It's everything that I had hoped it would be, plus some," he said, adding that the reason for his success is down to customer satisfaction.

"They've been able to get access to their medicine; their quality of life increases; they can get a better job because they're not in pain all the time," Blevin said.

As the medical marijuana industry expands in Durant, Nahrstedt said dispensaries are looking to set up shop near like-minded businesses.

"Like potentially a vape shop that's been existing, and then a medical marijuana business is interested in moving next door, or some sort of massage or outpatient therapy," he said.
