DENISON, Texas -- The Denison Independent School District is one of 373 throughout the U.S. and Canada -- and the only one in Grayson County -- to be named to the College Board's ninth annual AP District Honor Roll.

In order to be included, Denison schools had to increase the number of students participating in advanced placement courses while increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP exam scores of 3 or higher.

"The students are taking those as electives instead of just other random courses, so they're accepting the challenge," said Denison High School lead counselor Carrie Boettger.

Denison ISD recently added three new AP classes: computer science, human geography, and environmental science.

"I want to do computer science. I want to be a software developer," said student Avery Crawley, who said the district's AP program is good for getting college credit.

"It saves time and money, and you know it's a better class environment, too -- like everyone is focused, and it's good for getting things done," she said.

Educators say these classes not only challenge students, but prepare them for college.

"We really pride ourselves in making AP classes open for all students, and encourage all students to get involved," Boettger said. "Our teachers do a really good job of supporting those students who want to accept that challenge."

No Oklahoma schools were on the 2019 AP District Honor Roll.
