LONE GROVE, Okla. -- An Ardmore man is dead after swallowing a bag of an unknown substance at the Lone Grove jail.

Scott Lee Pumphrey was being booked when a bag filled with an unknown substance fell on the floor.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Steve Tanner said Pumphrey, 40, then picked up the bag, swallowed its contents, and attempted to escape.

Police were able to detain Pumphrey, but once they got him back in handcuffs, they noticed he was turning blue.

Pumphrey was rushed to Mercy Hospital in Ardmore, where he later died.

According to police, he had initially been taken into custody on Wilson city warrants for driving with a suspended license and expired tags.

The OSBI and the medical examiner have not yet determined what was in the mysterious bag, and what caused Pumphrey's death.

According to Carter County Jail records, Pumphrey had just been released on $300 bond Monday after being arrested for possession of a controlled substance and driving with a suspended license.
