PAULS VALLEY, Okla. -- The Garvin County Sheriff's Department is buzzing with excitement after plans to remodel the jail have were unveiled.

The current jail facility was built in 1974, and Sheriff Larry Rhodes said there hasn't been any sort of makeover since then.

"Repairs are daily back in our jail, so we're hoping that a full remodel like this will alleviate all those repair concerns," he said.

In addition to fixing some of the bumps and bruises around the jail, the renovations call for a major expansion. The sheriff's office will move in to what was the county assessor's office.

"We're going to assume this space ... which will allow the jail to expand west from its present location," Rhodes said, adding that the expansion will nearly double the jail's current capacity to 146 inmates. And that holds the promise of more jobs.

"That's always a plus to be able to expand our staff at the sheriff's office and maybe add some positions," the sheriff said.

But Rhodes warned that the plans might have to be scaled back if the the final price tag is too high.

"What we're waiting on is for cost estimates to start coming in," he said. "That's really going to be telling if we can do this remodel."

Construction could start in the next couple of months if the budget for the jail expansion is approved.
