ADA, Okla. -- In the 1980s, City of Ada employees created a Spirit of Christmas Corporation to help less fortunate kids in time for the holidays.

Public information director Lisa Bratcher said the event has been getting better and better.

"You'll receive your wrapped gift, we'll have cookies, we provide dinner, there's music, and -- of course -- you can't forget Santa Claus!" she said. "It's just a great way for the employees at the city to give back."

Money for the event is raised by several organizations, including local businesses and non-profits. City employee and committee member Brea Cloud says it's a community-wide party where just about everyone gets involved.

"We have church organizations that actually come help wrap as well," she said. "The actual party is us, but they come and they help get it all set up for us."

Cloud believes this is a great way to be able to give back and even help teach some important life lessons.

"I get to teach my child how important it is; a lot of the employees do that," she said. "We come and we serve them a community meal, we help hand out presents... it's just really great for my daughter to be giving and learn how important that is."

According to Bratcher, around 300 youngsters were served last year at the Chickasaw Community Center, but organizers of the event are hoping to help even more.

"We are down on numbers this year," she said. "We only have about 160 kids signed up, so we really want to get the word out there. The last day to sign up is Friday, which is November 30th."

Applicants for Spirit of Christmas benefits can sign up at the city's recreation office at 201 West 12th Street between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. through Friday. Parents or guardians will need to present the child's social security card or birth certificate.

The Christmas party is set for Tuesday, December 11.
