Van Alstyne celebrates National Night Out

VAN ALSTYNE, Texas-- Smiling faces all around Tuesday night, as people celebrated the Van Alstyne Community night. 

"We are community based law enforcement and we're here for them and we work for them", said Police Chief Time Barnes. 

The police and fire departments host the event in honor of National Night Out. 

It's a time for law enforcement to connect with the people in their town. 

"I got in the back of a police car, which i would hate to be back there if i really had to be back there" said 5th grader Travis White. 

There were bounces houses, a train for kids, and some free food. 

Kids got the chance to chat with police and fire fighters, and learn more about what they do on a daily basis.

"It's kinda scary when you're in the back of the car, they're nice though" said White.

This was the 35th anniversary for National Night Out, And Chief Barnes says every year the crowd gets bigger. 

"We do this once a year and as you can see it's a great turnout . We have a great community and they support law enforcement and their effects" said Chief Barnes. 

According to the National Night Out website, the nationwide celebration includes 16 thousand communities.

Tuesday night that included cities like Van Alstyne, Anna and Collinsville. 

"As you can see there's a lot of kids out here and its just about gaining trust with the community" said Chief Barnes.
