STRINGTOWN, Okla. -- Freedom was fleeting for a convicted burglar and sex offender who escaped from a state prison north of Stringtown early Wednesday morning.

Officials said Johnny Simmons, 34, walked away from the minimum security unit at the Mack Alford Correctional Center on U.S. 69 around 1:30 a.m.

Simmons was traced to a wooded area south of Coleman, Oklahoma -- 37 miles away -- at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday after a resident reported that he asked to borrow a phone. The escapee was tracked down by a K-9 unit.

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections said 41-year-old Tammy Edwards was arrested on complaints of aiding in Simmons' escape and harboring a fugitive.

Simmons was serving sentences for burglary, failing to register as a sex offender, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and pointing a firearm.
