DENISON, Texas -- For the first time in Denison's history, there's been a tie for the second spot on the City Council ballot.

Charlie Shearer got 33 percent of the vote and will advance to the runoff, but it's not yet clear who he'll be facing.

Rayce Guess and Brian Hander each received exactly 219 votes in Saturday's election.

With five candidates running for the Council spot, the city had been expecting a runoff... but not a tie for the second spot.

"We thought, 'Wow, this is getting crazy,'" Shearer said.

Next Tuesday, the elections office will recount all the votes. If there's still a tie, Guess and Hander will "cast lots."

"That means you'll either roll a dice, you will flip a coin, you could draw straws... anything is game," Hander said. "It seems like it's just a random chance."

"You would think in this day and age with the technology being what it is that it wouldn't be the case, but it's an old Texas law," Guess added. "The verbiage itself says it's old, so it's going to be interesting."

All three candidates said they're just happy with the voter turnout on Saturday.

"It's crazy, but I think it's a good thing because it shows there's a lot of interest in what's going on,"  Shearer said. "Hopefully in future elections were going to see more interest, and -- who knows -- we may have more races like this, who knows?"

The runoff election is scheduled for June 16.
