GARVIN COUNTY, Okla. — Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park personality Joe Exotic is recovering from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident on Tuesday afternoon.

The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety said Exotic — also known as Joseph Maldonado-Passage — failed to yield at a stop sign at the intersection of a county road and State Highway 29 about two miles west of Wynnewood.

Exotic's pickup truck was struck by a westbound pickup. The 73-year-old driver of the other truck refused treatment; his passenger was unhurt.

Exotic was taken to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City in stable condition with head, internal and external, and leg injuries, the DPS said.

A photo posted to his Facebook page shows Exotic in a hospital bed with a body brace.

"We appreciate all of your concerns and prayers. Joe is doing fine, he's pretty banged up but we will make it through this," said a message accompanying the photograph.

Joe Exotic is a Libertarian candidate for Oklahoma governor. In October, his husband shot and killed himself in the zoo's gift shop.
