LONE GROVE, Okla. -- Lone Grove City Council members have passed a measure that could help save lives in this Carter County town.

Anyone who pays for city water now has access to a discounted Air Evac Lifeteam membership. Signing up means getting faster medical care when it matters the most, without costing tens of thousands of dollars.

"Lord forbid something happened to one of my kids like that, or my neighbors kids or anyone around Lone Grove," said resident Dwayne Marshall. "But it is good to know that if something does happen and they need immediate flight that it's available."

When seconds matter, the cost of saving a life shouldn't.

"It's like any other insurance," Lone Grove resident Tony Palumbo said. "You think it's worthless until you need it, then it's extremely beneficial."

Palumbo said he worked in aviation for 30 years, retrofitting helicopters.

"We used to rebuild the inside of helicopters and make them for air ambulances when I lived out in Texas," he said. That's why Palumbo understands how crucial it can be to have access to an air ambulance in the event of an emergency.

Air Evac Lifeteam said an airlift can cost up to $40,000 without a membership. That's why Lone Grove Council members voted "yes" at Monday night's meeting to arrange for a $10 discount on the regular $65 family membership.

In exchange, the company will get access to the city's mailing list to contact potential customers. Air Evac Lifeteam said it will use that information only to promote its own services.

Residents say they're happy to see their city making some thoughtful decisions.

"I would like to say thank you to the City Council that voted this in," Marshall said. "We have only been here like three-and-a-half years, but we really like Lone Grove. And now that we have that, we feel better."

Air Evac Lifeteam has bases in Ardmore, Ada,  and Sherman in the Texoma region.
