SHERMAN, Texas -- A construction fire caused thousands of dollars in damage to one of Sherman's oldest buildings Thursday morning.

The fire was reported around 11:30 a.m. at the former Burlington Industries building on Highway 75 at West Park Avenue. The building has been vacant for the last three years.

The fire marshal said the blaze was triggered by smoldering material left behind by demolition crews using torches. The fire was concentrated below ground level and put out within 15 minutes.

No injuries were reported, but the fire caused several thousand dollars worth of damage.

The building was erected in 1891. The Texas Historical Commission marker erected at the site said what started as the Sherman Manufacturing Company made sacks for shipping cotton.

The city of Sherman was founded in 1846.
