SHERMAN, Texas -- Finisar Corporation is coming to Sherman.

The optical communications firm -- which is based in Sunnyvale, California, and has a manufacturing plant in nearby Allen, Texas -- purchased the MEMC Manufacturing building on Tuesday for $20 million.

The three-story, 693,000 square foot edifice on Highway 75 has been idle for about five years.

Finisar will bring science and engineering jobs to the city.

"It is a historic project," said John Plotnik, president of the Sherman Economic Development Corporation. "It's a phenomenal project, because we're bringing in a new company which we suspect will bring hundreds of jobs -- and a very high quality of jobs -- and a new line of production which we have not seen in the past."

Finisar has already started plans on developing the building.

The company calls itself the world's largest supplier of optical communications components and also has facilities in Sweden, Germany, Israel, India, Malaysia, Singapore, China, and Australia.

The MEMC building, at the corner of U.S. 75 and Shepherd Road,  originally produced computer chips. It has been closed since 2011.
