SHERMAN, Texas -- Citizens peacefully shared their concern about systemic racism in the United States with a lunch hour march in front of the Grayson County Courthouse.

"What we're trying to do is raise the conscience level of everyone about the need for social justice for all," said Sherman resident Tony Beaverson.

Protesters and counter-protesters like Darren Kessler of Sherman -- wearing a "Trump 2016" T-shirt -- showed up to voice their opinions.

"In America, you should be able to disagree and still hug it out, " Kessler said.

Sherman police were on hand in case of any trouble, but the rally was a peaceful affair.

"I supported Trump," Kessler said. "That doesn't mean I am a racist. And so I wanted to come out here and just show that in at least Sherman, Texas, people with opposing views can stand side-by-side and get along."

Rally organizer Lindy Olsen said the Grayson County event was set for Friday because of national racial justice rallies planned for Saturday.

"I thought this would be a good moment -- not only to call attention to history, but to have a good conversation about racism in our community and what we are going to do going forward," she said.
