DURANT, OK- One day after a deadly accident on a major Texoma highway local police are still trying to figure out how it all happened.

It happened around midnight Sunday morning on Highway 75 in Durant. Police say a woman was hit and killed by an oncoming car. Police say there's still questions not yet answered and now a family is left without one they love.

The crash happened Sunday morning on Highway 75 just north of the Choctaw Casino right before the Highway 70 bypass.

Durant Police say 30 year old Stephanie Evans was killed when she was hit by a van while walking north on the road heading into Durant

"It's just awful. I can't imagine something like that happening," said Shawna Mills.

The driver of the van called 911 and waited until police arrived.

"It appeared the victim was either in the traveled portion of the roadway or very near," said Det. Buddy Faulkner with the Durant Police Dept.

Detective Buddy Faulkner says the driver didn't appear to be intoxicated. Those who drive the major highway say that stretch of road near the casino say it's a danger zone.

"It's just there's so many people you know. So many people coming out of the casino and going to the travel plaza and stuff," said Mills.

Some say parts of that road needs repaired.

"The road needs to be fixed, cause I know it's rough. The right lane especially is rough," said resident Harold Bledsoe.

No matter how it all unfolded the shock of something so tragic still remains.

"My heart goes out to the family of the lady that was killed," said Bledsoe.

According to posts on social media, Evan's leaves behind two young children. Police are still working to piece together exactly what happened.

"We aren't a hundred percent sure what she was doing, we just know she was walking towards Durant," said Det. Faulkner.

Police say there were no other witnesses of the accident. It is still an open investigation.
