GRAYSON COUNTY -- A Sherman woman's family said she was hit and killed Sunday while performing an act of kindness.

Denison Police arrested Clyde Stanbery, 32, for the death of 20-year-old Lizette Lopez.

He is accused of hitting Lopez Sunday afternoon and continuing to drive along Texoma Parkway. He eventually crashed into a ditch near Spur 503.

Stanbery is facing numerous charges, including intoxicated manslaughter. Police also charged him with aggravated kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon. They said he was armed with a machete and attempted to steal another vehicle after crashing his own.

"She had a really strong character," said Yuseth Johnson, a family member of Lopez. "She never let anybody put her down. she always looked out for her family."

She was with her family Sunday, riding home after finishing her shift at Nick's Restaurant.

"She saw a turtle on the side of the road, and of course she has a big heart, so they pulled over, she got out of the car, and then she tried to move it and that when she got hit," Johnson said.

Nick's Restaurant was closed Monday to remember Lopez. Signs taped to the door read "Rest in peace, Lizzy Lou.

Stanbery has served time in jail for numerous marijuana convictions.

"You know what, to be honest, I don't even think they're thinking about him right now," Johnson said. "They just don't even have room for him."

He is being held in the Grayson County Jail on a 115,000 dollar bond.
