DURANT, OK -- If you have recently visited Salita's Mexican Restaurant, you may want to contact your bank.

The popular downtown eateries’ credit card system was hacked this month.

Customers that have gone to the restaurant between July 1st through the 27th are the ones that need to check their credit cards for any unauthorized charges.

It’s the kind of news that most business owners and customers don’t want to hear.

“We were notified by our customers and then the authorities after, that maybe our credit card system had been compromised,” said Salita’s Representative, Chris Pierce.

Three weeks ago, the popular downtown Durant eatery, Salita’s Mexican Restaurant’s credit card system was hacked.

"It’s a shock that it would happen to such a small local business," said Pierce.

An unauthorized source, whom authorities believe may be from out of the country, gained access to Salita’s point of sale software, stealing thousands of their customer’s credit card numbers.

"That person would have then taken the credit card information and sold it back into the country, so where we're seeing a lot of transactions come up is North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee," said Pierce.

One of those victims is Latesha Arnold, she wasn’t aware her card had been compromised until she got a call from her bank.

"They asked me if I had gotten gas in North Carolina the day before, and I had told them no,” said Arnold.

Since learning about the security breach on Monday, Salita’s said they have fixed the problem.

"We were able to increase the security and patch the problem, and keep the bad guys out basically," said Pierce.

The owners of Salita's Restaurant, the Rawlings family, even went as far as to disclose and warn their customers of the breach on their Facebook page, which have been greeted with positive responses.

"They’re genuinely concerned, they feel bad that they're customers information was compromised," said Pierce.

This is the second time this year the Rawlings family has been hit with hardship.

Just last month, the beloved owner of Salita’s, Mark Rawlings passed away.

Salita’s said their main concern right now is their customer’s well-being.

"We’re just trying to handle each day just the best we can, and continue to do things like Mark would do,” said Pierce.

If you’ve been compromised, authorities urge you to notify your financial institution immediately.
