Atoka basketball invited to Tournament of Champions
ATOKA, OK -- Last spring the Atoka Wampus Cat basketball team found itself in the state tournament for the first time in 25 years.
A three-point loss to the eventual runners-up knocked them out, but now they're reloaded and gunning for gold.
A hot start has them ranked No. 2 in all of Class 3A, they've also been invited to play in one of the most prestigious tournaments in the country this holiday break.
They hope the competition they face at the Tournament of Champions can battle test them into the grind of the season.
"It's going to be the 50th anniversary, the oldest invitational tournament in Oklahoma for boys, we're going to play number two in 5A, Tulsa Memorial, these guys are excited, our community is excited, our school is excited," head coach Russ Harrison said.
"To see all those big teams up there and we get a chance to play against them and possibly upset them, it just is a great feeling," senior guard Bobby Johnson added.
"I mean it's the first time we've been invited, it's the 50th one, it's big, a lot of competition we're going to see what we can do up there," senior guard Brandon Calicutt continued.
They'll open Monday December 29 at the Veterans Arena in Tulsa.
