Battle for Texas 6-2ADI in Van Alstyne Friday

VAN ALSTYNE, TX -- It's Week 8 for area high school teams as they only have three more weeks until playoffs. One of the biggest matchups in all the area will kick from Panther Stadium in Van Alstyne when the Pottsboro Cardinals come to town.

The Cards have been a pleasant surprise this season winning all four of their district bouts so far in what looked like would be a rebuilding year.

Van Alstyne meanwhile is back on the rise after a one win 2012.

The winner of this one will likely take the district and both teams know how tough of a challenge it will be come Friday night.

"We know we got to work and we know what's at stake here and we just know we have to really, really got to pay attention to practice all week and really work hard," Van Alstyne junior quarterback Alex Phillips said.

"It's going to take a team effort, a lot of heart, be physical, we're going to have to weather the storm like we say, we're going to have to hit, we're going to have to tackle and we're going to have to take care of the football since we're on the road," Pottsboro senior defensive end Preston Lawrence added.

"They're a smash-mouth football team. They all have really good motors and they play hard, but I think we'll be able to stop them," Van Alstyne senior guard Connor Mayes said.

"It's a big win. It's a big win for us, our goal, like I said, is to win a district championship. We know if we beat them we at least get a share of it. So, it's really big for us," Pottsboro head coach Matt Poe concluded.

Kick-off from Panther Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
