SHERMAN, TX---It's not uncommon to know someone who's been touched by cancer and big strides have been taken to fight it, but there are still steps we can take to prevent it.

Today, World Cancer Day is dedicated to spreading awareness in the fight against cancer. Health experts say one in three common cancers may be preventable and doctors say there are four easy steps we can take to reduce cancer risks. The first is to quit smoking.

"Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the country, as well as in the world, and most of those deaths are related to smoking," Texas Oncology's Dr. Anana T. Shivnani said. "That's why a lot of our efforts go into trying to get people to never start smoking in the first place, or quit smoking if we're seeing them for something else."

Shivnani says it's important to get yearly checkups and screenings because they can detect cancers at their earliest and most treatable stages.

Eating right and staying active is also important. He says an estimated 25 to 30% of major cancers are associated with lack of activity.

Last, but not least, he says save your skin and stressed that it is very important to avoid the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.
