Public meeting to be held for safe room rebate program

GRAYSON COUNTY, TX -- Lots still sit empty on Crestview Drive in Denison.

Four years ago, a tornado touched down in this neighborhood, leveling homes that used to be here.

Unlike the houses across the street from Jeanice Richardson, she says only her roof was damaged.

"It was very scary," she recalled.

Although no one was hurt in the tornadoes, 10 homes were destroyed and dozens more, like Richardson's, were damaged.

Saturday, the Grayson County Office of Emergency Management will announce details of a new program for above and below ground safe rooms which it says will help save lives during the next round of severe weather. The details will be given out at a public meeting at Grayson College, 6101 Grayson Dr. in Denison. It begins at 10am.

Under the program, eligible applicants can get a 50% rebate from the cost of installing a safe room. The maximum rebate is $3,000.

Gregg Engle, with Hausner Storm Shelters in Durant, says the popularity of safe rooms have increased over the years, but with new incentives like Grayson County's rebate program, he expects business to pick up even more.

"I think it's a good thing," he said. "It gives them the opportunity to maybe get a unit whereas before they couldn't."
