WHITESBORO, TX -- A gas leak forced several houses to be evacuated, after police say a worker digging a trench next to a house hit a gas line.

It happened Thursday afternoon around 1 p.m. on West Main Street. The repairman hit a gas line that feeds into the house.

Even though the house's gas meter was shut off, gas from the main line started leaking from the broken pipe, causing what neighbors describe as a hissing sound, Police Chief Scott Taylor said.

When police found out what was going on, they told everyone in the area to clear out. "They had to evacuate us and we gone to the church," says resident Jerad McGowen.

Atmos Energy workers came to shut off the gas and put in a new line. The residents were allowed back into their homes.
