ARDMORE, OK -- Mercy Hospital has hired eleven new doctors over the past year, benefiting patients and the larger community.
As Ardmore expands, Mercy has brought in more doctors to meet the demand. And while the field of medicine changes as well, Mercy says it will make efforts to keep up.
"You look back a few decades ago and one doctor might cover a broad range of specialties that now is broken down into sub-specialties. The scope of medicine has gotten so broad that it's really difficult for any one physician to be an expert in all areas," said Randy Jobe, vice president of clinic operations.
Other hospital staff members say that new doctors means better and more frequent healthcare options for patients, and that new jobs mean new income, and more money spent locally.
"With the additions of physicians, they bring their families with them, they buy homes in our community, they shop at our stores, and go to our local churches, and so the dollars are spent right here in our local community by bringing in these physicians," said Trish Long, the hospital's business development director.
The hospital is attracting top notch doctors across the county, including two from the University of Texas's MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Mercy adds that this is just one step in providing better local healthcare in southern Oklahoma.
"One term that we use in healthcare a lot is access to care. We make it easier for people to get to their physician, hopefully sooner, and more frequently so that they can receive the care at the right time," Jobe said.
