West Nile Virus in Grayson County

Updated:

Two more cases of the West Nile Virus were confirmed today in Grayson County. Both victims are hospitalized in Grayson County. With Labor Day holiday weekend coming up, a lot of people will be heading outdoors to celebrate. So how can you protect yourself from being infected with the virus? KTEN's Margaret Stokes reports.

With the two cases of West Nile confirmed today in Grayson County that brings the total number of victims in our viewing area to six, all confirmed within the past month.

Today the Texas Department Of Health officials confirmed two more people in Grayson County have fallen victim to the West Nile Virus. One of the victims, from Fannin County said he exercised regularly and all of a sudden wasn't able to walk on one of his legs. He soon found out that he had somehow been infected with the West Nile Virus, and the virus had attacked nerves in his leg. He remains in the Grayson County Hospital.

According to state health officials, August is usually the peak of West Nile cases, but they say pre-cautions should be taken through October. If residents do have plans to be outdoors over the holiday weekend, especially if fishing by stagnate water or plan to be outside around dusk officials say wearing sleeves and pants is the best way to protect yourself from mosquitoes.

If you are outdoors this Labor Day weekend, and can't bear the heat in pants and long sleeves, make sure to use bug repellent that contains Deet and that it is EPA approved.
