SOUTHMAYD, Texas (KTEN) — Southmayd's new police station is almost ready for officers to move in.

The facility will triple the available space for the department, which is currently working out of two small offices in the city's fire station.

Patrol Officer Michael Aguirre brought the need to City Hall's attention earlier this year as surrounding cities continue to grow.

"With the future of the Tollway coming through Southmayd and moving north into Grayson County, this community and this area the structure of law enforcement is going to be critical," he said.

The new building creates breathing room to conduct interviews and hold evidence, as well as having a lobby area for citizens who may have questions or concerns.

"The City Council of Southmayd has been very gracious and understanding of our needs and wanting to help improve the police department, so they've had some money set aside for a building," said Lt. Jerrod Nortmon.

Southmayd Mayor David Turner said the new police station will not require any tax increases.
