VAN ALSTYNE, Texas  (KTEN) — The sky-high business signs that line US 75 in Van Alstyne will soon be a thing of the past.

"You have the iconic signs like a Jack in the Box... the Braum's... those ones should be allowed," said Van Alstyne business owner Kevin Soucie.

In 2022, the Van Alstyne City Council decided to prohibit pole signs and upgrade them to "monument" signs that are a lot more down to earth.

Two years later, the tall sign pointing motorists to Casey's General Store is coming down, and there are plans to remove more.

"Not the intention to do any harm," explained City Manager Lane Jones. "If we have an operator who has a pole sign that'd like to take it down before that deadline, we'll work with them to come up with some tax abatements or some incentives to get that removed and help them with a new monument sign."

Business owners have until June 15, 2027 to remove old signs, and June 15, 2029, to remove new signs.

Not all business owners are pleased with the sign restrictions.

"Somebody who's out of town — which is majority of the traffic that runs up and down 75 — they're not going to notice the itty bitty sign that's not 50, 60 feet in the air," Soucie said. "They're going to just keep on driving through, and these businesses are going to suffer."

Employees at Casey's General Store are open to a new monument sign, even though the height is expected to be 14 feet.

"It could be something that could differentiate our city from other cities, so that may attract some drivers when they're driving by," said Casey's employee Gian Grant. "They're like, 'What is that?' Instead of them having to break their necks to look up,  you see a lot of them you don't think good about the area."

Van Alstyne's city manager believes the new monument signs should not impede any business owners' means to advertise.
