SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — Sherman High School staged an eye-opening event Wednesday about the potential impact of drunk driving ahead of prom.

Students gathered in the parking lot to watch Shattered Dreams, a presentation by classmates to show the dangers of impaired driving.

The scene brought Sherman police, firefighters and paramedics to demonstrate what goes on after a DWI crash.

Officer Tyler Carroll played a role in the reenactment, saying driving while intoxicated is a charge that Sherman police deal with all too often.

"Every decision that you make has a consequence," he said. "It doesn't matter if it's a drink before you drive or studying the night before a test... if you choose a big decision like drinking and driving, it could not only affect yourself, but you could kill your friends." "Nobody's life is worth a little bit of fun."

Shattered Dreams showed Sherman students the consequences of drunk driving.

Thalia Estes helped organize the demonstration for her classmates.

"It really made me more aware of what's going on around me, it made me aware of my surroundings and it has given me more of an incentive to go and help people, rather than just be quiet," Estes said.

The presentation resonated with students ahead of prom season.

"One of the kids made a comment, I don't want to drink and drive so I was very impressed with that," Attendee Rita Noel said.
