MARIETTA, Okla. (KTEN) — On Wednesday morning, crews from the Red River Valley Rural Electric Association were sent to Marietta Public Schools after an early morning power outage ended the school day before it started.

According to school officials, the outage occurred around 6:00 am on Wednesday, as a result of damage to an underground electrical line. The line break resulted in a loss of power to half of the Marietta School District.

"It included our cafeteria, elementary and primary schools, and our administration offices." Stated Superintendent Brandi Naylor.

The REA says there are multiple scenarios that could have caused the outage.

"It can be caused by many, many things, especially with so much construction going on over the past couple of years at Marietta campus.” Said REA Vice President of Marketing and Member Services KorDale Lornes. “Things shifting, the ground's really saturated with so much rain that we've got in the past couple of days, things could have shifted around."

Once the crew arrived at the school, they got right to work getting power back to the buildings that needed it.

"A lineman arrived on scene within a few minutes, he was able to isolate an underground fault.” Said Lornes. “Once that was isolated we were able to back feed and get the school back up and running."

the REA says that no surrounding buildings were affected by the outage. Marietta Public Schools is expected to be back in person on Thursday morning.
