GUNTER, Texas (KTEN) — As the solar eclipse was waning on Monday afternoon, two workers with the Texas Department of Transportation turned into lifesavers.

Tim Smith and Jaune Neal were headed south on State Highway 289 in Gunter when they spotted a woman in distress. She was slumped over in her Mazda, clutching her chest.

As one of them comforted the woman, another assisted with traffic control while waiting for first responders to arrive.

"Just talked to her and kept her comfortable... just made sure that, you know... let her know that we was there and wasn't gonna leave until she was taken care of," Smith said.

The woman was rushed by Gunter Fire Rescue paramedics to Baylor Scott and White Hospital in McKinney for treatment of cardiac arrest.

Gunter police Officer Anthony Agee said Tuesday that the woman was alive. He said without the action of these TxDOT workers, first responders could have been dealing with a worse situation when they arrived.
