BONHAM, Texas (KTEN) — Some Bonham residents aren't happy with the city's rising homeless population.

Bonham police are reaching out to residents about what the department can and can't do about unhoused people in the downtown district.

Police Chief Andrew Hawkes acknowledged the issue, but said there are limits as to what patrol officers can do when they observe a homeless person.

"They are not necessarily committing a crime; we can't just tell them to get in our police car and drive them somewhere," he said. "If they are sitting on a public street not committing crimes, there is not a whole lot that law enforcement can do."

Hawkes added that homeowners and business owners can file a criminal trespassing complaint for more than public common areas in front of businesses.
