JOHNSTON COUNTY, Okla. (KTEN) — One person is dead and two Johnston County deputies are on paid administrative leave after an officer involved shooting that happened at the Blue River Public Fishing and Hunting Area on Sunday night."

The incident occurred around 10:30 pm, when deputies with the Johnston County Sheriff's Office were alerted of a suspect that was wanted in Cleveland County for a protective order violation. Deputies were able to locate the suspect’s car near the Blue River area, but found the car to be empty. Deputies later found the suspect in another vehicle with an unsuspecting driver.

"Whenever deputies approached that vehicle, whenever the traffic stop was conducted, the suspect produced a firearm." Stated Hunter McKee, the Public Information Manager with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

This altercation led to an exchange of rounds between the suspect and the deputies. Both deputies, along with the civilian, were uninjured in the fight. The suspect passed away in a local hospital due to his injuries.

"It can be a very dangerous situation whenever deputies are trying to conduct a traffic stop.” Said McKee. “It’s very fortunate that none of the other deputies that responded were hurt."

"Our Sheriff's department here is awesome.” Said Johnston County resident Wayne Reed. “They do what they do best. We're glad to have them on board here. If it wasn't for these guys, and gals, there'd be a lot worse crimes going on around here."

Another resident, Johnathan Jacobo wants to remind citizens to be smart. "Don't pull a gun. They're trained, you know, as much as you think they're probably not, they outnumber you."

The OSBI is currently investigating the events leading up to the shooting.
