DENISON, Texas (KTEN) – Meteorological winter is defined as December, January, and February, statistically the coldest months of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. In Texoma, we saw our fair share of cold air.

To start, let’s take a look at some weather records for any given meteorological winter in Texoma. The hottest day during a meteorological winter was on February 22, 1996 with a high temperature of 91°. The coldest day was during the Big Freeze of 2021; 9° is the current record low high temperature for any day in meteorological winter set on February 15, 2021.

No new all-time temperature or precipitation records were set during meteorological winter this time around, thankfully. December 2023 was rather warm with 21 of 31 days being above average. The first of a few cold air surges arrived on Christmas 2023. After nearly two full weeks at or above average, Sherman finally dipped below average from December 25 to 29.

January 2024 was the most active month of the winter. Two arctic blasts and Sherman’s only snowfall due to lake effect snow off Lake Texoma occurred in January. The first round of cold air brought daily record low high temperatures in Sherman, Texas on January 14, 15, and 16. The second and less severe cold air surge brought highs into the low to mid 30s from January 19 through January 22.

Sherman recorded a trace of snow on January 15 when strong north winds aligned with the longest fetch of Lake Texoma (approximately from the Roosevelt Bridge (US HWY 70) south to Eisenhower State Park, roughly 12 miles) and brought a band of snow to Grayson County. Some managed to pick up an inch of snow from this narrow snow band. Now, whether this is a sign of what is to come this summer is still to be determined. We can only hope for a less brutally hot summer than the past two.
