(KTEN)  — Texas has been the top exporting state in the country for the last 21 years, according to Texas Economic Development.

"For Texas, it's good; were bringing in tax dollars for it, people are coming in and spending their money online and in store," said Shari Skomoroh, owner of Monarch Boutique in Denison.

Small businesses account for 92.4 percent of Texas' exporting businesses.

With many cities in North Texas experiencing growth, construction has taken over streets.

"We had to really push our online opportunities with that," Skomoroh said.

And many stores faced challenges trying to bring people in if there was trouble accessing store fronts, so they turned to online sales.

"It's a really important part of our business, because we cannot wait for people to walk through the doors," said Skomoroh. "It gives us way more awareness; it creates awareness of our brand, and obviously more revenue that we wouldn't get on a local level."

But why do so many businesses come to Texas, leading to he state's high export numbers.

"We have the highway system that runs right through the middle of town, but we also have a regional airport at NTRA," said City of Sherman spokesperson Nate Strauch. "And then the rail... even though it's an old technology it's still vitally important for some of these industrial manufacturing to have access to rails."

And support from Texas legislature.

"The economic success that Texas has had over the past two decades really starts at the state level," Strauch added. "With solid policies made in Austin that promote growth, promote businesses to come here."
