SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — A Gunter man has been sentenced to a life prison term after being convicted on child indecency charges in 397th District Court.

Ronald Gene Tolbert, 60, had previously been convicted of sexual assault. Tolbert must serve at least 35 years before he can be considered for parole.

His young accuser came forward after attending a child abuse prevention presentation at school in February 2021.

"These types of cases are always very difficult for our victims," said Assistant District Attorney Jeremy Wood. "In addition to having to publicly talk about their abuse in open court, they also have to face their perpetrator. This young girl showed tremendous courage doing both."

Tolbert's record included a conviction for sexually assaulting an 18-year-old girl in Grayson County in 2008. He was sentenced to 10 years in that case and was required to register as a sex offender for life.
