DENISON, Texas (KTEN) — Senior citizens in Denison enjoy a fun twist on a popular sport every week at the Denison Senior Citizen Center, thanks to a partnership with Denison Parks and Recreation and Sher-Den Home Health.

The Denison Mighty Dragons is the name of the team meeting on Tuesdays to play chair volleyball.

“Watch us and sit in that chair one time,” said player James Thorne. “You’ll be hooked.”

The competitive sport lets cities show off their senior athletes, increasing hand-eye coordination, reflexes, mobility, and endurance.

"It's not over-exerting," said player Francoise Baker. “Just at your own pace, within your limits; and we also say, 'The ball is not worth the fall!'"

Health benefits are not the only positives seniors walk away with.

"That's what I enjoy more than anything,” said player Robert Clark. “The happiness that it brings these older people... we have people who play with us that are 80 and 90 years old."

"I am over 80," said Micki Folse. “I know what it feels like to not really have any friends, and when I come here I have lots of friends."
